•Distribution:
Breeds in Canada and Greenland, south to Maine, Iceland, Jan Mayen, Faeroes,
Spitsbergen, Bear Islands and Novaya Zembla and north-west Russia (White
Sea), coastal trough Norway, Sweden, British Isles and Ireland to the channel
Islands, and North-west France.
•Habitat:
Breeds in colony's, mostly in borrows on grassy maritime slopes and sea
cliffs, also in boulder fields and scree slopes.
•Size:
Length 32 cm.
Wingspan 55 cm.
•Behaviour:
The birds assemble before the coast in early spring. After a few days they
go to shore "en masse". Courtship is accompanied with bill clapping and
fierce fighting.
•Food:
Sand eels, whiting and sprat.
•Reproduction:
One single egg is laid and is incubated by both parents for 6 weeks.
